Surfing
One
of the many reasons why we bought the mill was because of my love
of surfing. The Basque country was where surfing was introduced
to Europe. In the 1950s, a group of American surfers started surfing
at La Cote des Basques beach in Biarritz - from that point on
the sport boomed and the South West coast of France is now the
European capital of surfing.
Surfing
Beaches
Biarritz
is a great place to start: beginners and experienced surfers enjoy
the breaks at the Grande Plage and Cote des Basques. This is where
the Biarritz
Surf Festival is held every July, north of Biarritz. Anglet
offers fantastically varied breaks from point breaks to beach
breaks. It is also less crowded than Biarritz. Even further north
of Biarritz are the famous breaks of Hossegor
on the Landes coast. Hossegor is arguably the best beach break
in Europe and hosts the Quiksilver
Pro every September.
South of Biarritz towards the Spanish border is the legendary
Guethary break which is the longest break in Europe, Bidart is
also an excellent spot. Then for the the very few either brave
or mad enough is the Belharra
Reef break off St Jean de Luz which has reached up to 60 feet
- it is regularly visited by the Billabong
XXL team I have added a couple of images of the huge wave
opposite.
Surf Schools, Board Hire & Surf Shops
There are plenty surf schools and board hire can either be arranged
at the many surf shops or in the summer months directly on the
beaches.
