Golf
Golf in France was born in the Basque country, where France meets Spain and the Atlantic Ocean embraces the Pyrenees mountain range. Here, on a beautiful stretch of the coast, Napoleon III and the European aristocracy created the fashionable seaside resort of Biarritz, more than a century ago. Today the resort is twinned with Augusta, venue of the Masters, and home of the "Golden Square" of Basque golf, formed by the four vintage courses of Biarritz Le Phare (1888), La Nivelle (1907), Chiberta (1927) and Chantaco (1928). The Basque region has dominated the golf scene in France over the century, since Arnaud Massy - caddy at Biarritz and the first foreigner and only French player to have won the British Open back in 1907, to Jean Garaialde, famous golf architect and twelve times winner of the French PGA Championship in the 70's and 80's. Further south on the Spanish side of the Basque Country, the Royal San Sebastian (1910) is the home club of the two times Masters green jacket Jose Maria Olazabal.

Aquitaine is one of the foremost golf regions in France, boasting some of the best and oldest clubs in France, such as Pau Golf Club, the oldest golf course in continental Europe. Pau was founded in 1856 by former officers of the Duke of Wellington, who retired in the region after the Napoleonic wars.
