16th century water mill for holiday rental

Description of the Mill
Moulin de Pierretoune, built in 1550, has 4 bedrooms all with great views over the surrounding countryside and river, bathroom, a large living/dining room with fireplace, kitchen and utility room. The living room leads out onto a large terrace overlooking the river and lovely wooded gardens. The most striking thing about the location is the quiet with no traffic noise whatsoever. There are 5 acres of riverside gardens with sandy banks perfect for picnics.

The house sleeps 7 to 8 people with 3 double rooms and a twin room (single bed with pull-out bed below). Bedding and towels are provided and are changed weekly. There is a wood cabin/chalet available for surplus which can sleep up to 4 extra guests and is self-contained (kitchen/shower/wc).

Where
The house is just outside the village of La Bastide Clairence, voted one of the most beautiful villages in France and is only 30 mins from the beaches and life of Biarritz and 40 mins from Medieval Pau. Biarritz Airport is 25 mins and Pau 40 minutes away. Ryan Air fly low cost into both airports - Easyjet fly to Bilbao and Toulouse. St. Jean de Luz, San Sebastian, Bilbao are also within easy driving distance.

Directions to the Mill
From Biarritz/Bayonne airport take directions firstly for St. Jean de Luz/Saint Sebastien, then towards Bayonne/Bordeaux to get on to the A64 motorway and direction: Pau/Toulouse. From Pau airport, take the A64 towards Bayonne/St. Sebastien - Take exit no. 4 ‘URT’

Then take all signs to La Bastide Clairence (sometimes indicated as ‘La Bastide Cl.’). A 10 minute drive will bring you to the village. Drive straight up and park on the main square. Ghislaine Potentier is our keyholder and cleaner, and also a mosaic artist. You will see her name in large letters on the left hand side of the square above her workshop. Her front door is the large red door to the right of the atelier/workshop. You can call her on her mobile: +33 6 70 13 88 31.

Ghislaine will then accompany you to the mill, just a short drive out of the village to the hamlet of Pessarou.

What to do
Surfing is one of the main reasons to go to the Basque region, it has arguably the best surf in Europe and in summer the water is warm enough to surf without a wetsuit. In winter, the Pyrenees are easily accessible with the nearest ski resort only 1 hour away. But because the house is on the river, canoeing, walking, fly fishing and cycling are the easiest way to enjoy the amazing scenery around the house. Take a look at our extensive activities pages.

The Basque region is also arguably the best region for gastronomy in France with one of the differences to certain other regions in France being that you get service with a smile!
